SILK MUSEUM

To commemorate the centennial anniversary of the opening of the Port of Yokohama, Silk Museum was opened in 1959 on the site of Jardine Matheson & Co., a British trading firm (then known as English House No.1). To introduce the glamour of beautiful silk, this museum displays valuable clothing crafts, for example, kimonos of the Edo Period and era-restored costumes. Furthermore, the science, the technology, and the history of silk production; the dyeing and weaving of costumes including works by the ningen kokuho (living national treasures); and live silkworms being raised; are all on display.
