Smart Illumination Yokohama 2019

Smart Illumination Yokohama 2019

Smart Illumination Yokohama is an artistic event that attempts to bring a new face to the nightscape of Yokohama, using as its stage the waterfront of downtown Yokohama, which has for years been the site of some splendid townscaping. The event started in the year 2010 in line with the night view development project for the "Zou no Hana (elephant's trunk) terrace" promoted by Yokohama City's creative city policy. In 2011, as well as attempting to develop a night view performance optimizing the creativity of artists, Smart Illumination Yokohama was held for the first time in response to the Great East Japan Earthquake that occurred in March of that year, taking a theme of using energy-saving technologies such as LED and solar cell enegy, which will become irreplaceable energy sources in the future. In 2012, the area and number of works illuminated was greatly increased, and in 2013 artists, designers, corporations, universities and citizens joined in a multi-member group to create a new night view of Yokohama under the theme of "a Yokohama night view made by everyone." The Smart Illumination Award was also instituted, to reward young artists and students for their works.
